Many homeowners don’t realize it, but a foundation does more than just hold up the house. In many cases there are plumbing pipes that run under and through the concrete to your home. If you have plumbing problems, the plumber may need to dig under the slab to access the pipes and sewage line to make repairs. When this happens, a roofing contractor has to perform a tunnel inspection to make sure it is safe. Without a San Antonio tunnel inspection, your plumbing repairs will not be up to code, and your foundation could be in peril. Here’s what’s involved.
Why Is an Inspection Required?
There are several reasons why plumbing professionals may want to tunnel into or under the slab. In many cases, they do so to remove old pipes and install new ones, for instance. However, tunnels can be a safety hazard, and if they are not treated with the respect they deserve, then the technician could be injured or worse. Soil could come loose, the ventilation might not be adequate, or the concrete could collapse. That’s why once the tunnel is dug out, a tunnel inspection professional is required to assess it before the project can move forward.

A certified professional will check the tunnel to make sure that there are no unsafe conditions. This involves checking the soil, the strength of the slab, and weather there is adequate ventilation. There must be a retaining wall to prevent soil from sliding back into the tunnel. The barrier should also prevent water from getting in, since moisture can cause the soil to loosen.

Only then will the inspector sign off on it. At that point, all the barriers must be in place, and a photo of the retaining wall sent to the office of the inspector. They must be able to produce it at any time to show that the work was done up to code.
